General Description: Hyakurai is, well; colorful, to say the least. Even without clothing to add to the effect, his own natural appearance speaks to this fact. Hair like the darkest purple storm clouds and eyes like the brightest gold, this man can certainly stick out in a crowd. His off duty style is normally a play on a simple long tunic like over shirt and tan hakama bottoms. The tunic itself is always closed, with a small pendant near the neck. The top and shoulders is the same tan as his hakama; while the rest is a pale blue-purple that matches his hair. He wears a thin, red obi around his waist, tied loosely in front. Beneath the tunic is a secondary belt, which is what actually holds his hakama up. Shoes are always optional for him, he has spent most of his life barefoot, and therefore the soles of his feet have thickened to compensate. When he does wear shoes; they are usually standard issue shinobi sandals; although if need be he does have a pair of thin cloth boots that make his normal outfit. These are worn mostly for formal events, as he doesn't believe in 'dressing up' for events. It is only on missions that he changes his general dress; and that is only to don the normal Jounin uniform. He rarely carries his sword, unless on a mission; at which time it can be seen slung across his back and held in place by a simple white sash. He also has a tattoo of a dragon that begins at the base of his neck, and which winds down to the top of his left foot. The tattoo itself appears to be alive in some ways; as the colors are a vibrant mix of purple and golds, which seem to shimmer as he moves. As a party trick of sorts; he is able to simulate the dragon moving through special synchronized movements of his body.
About You!
Personality: Hyakurai is the type to rarely speak; but always watch. He prefers to hang back for the most part; spending his time alone or with only one to two people at a time. This is due to his heightened ability to sense emotion, something that when combined with a train eye for reading body language; makes larger groups unpleasant. He seeks harmony around himself, and large groups of people are by nature chaos controlled. However, chaos is still chaos, and the sheer power of larger groups is easily overwhelming, unless he was to spend large amounts of energy to tune the world out. This ties back into his quiet facade; as it is far easier to blend into the background when you are quiet. Being born an only child helped as well; as he didn't have the chance to hone social skills on siblings; and as all his cousins where either several years older or younger, he missed out there as well. That's not to say he isn't social at all; he just doesn't always know how to start a conversation, or what constitutes inappropriate behavior. He can, and usually does, come off as brash and brutish at first; barreling through conversations and missions like a one man storm, rarely stopping to think about what he's doing, or check if his team mates are even still alive in his wake. That's not to say he can't, or won't, plan; he just doesn't like to be inactive for long periods once he's motivated enough to actually work.
Likes: Hyakurai is the type to like something one moment, then hate it the next. He's about as consistent as the lightning he wields; that is to say, he's constantly changing. Very little remains the same from day to day; but he will admit to a fairly stable liking for candied ginger and fried pork. Then again, that just means he's gone a full week without changing his mind, or finding something better. He does rather like his swords, and the long process of proper maintenance is soothing enough for him to outright enjoy for the most part. He's just not a fan of how repetitive the process is. Puzzles delight him to no end; so long as there are plenty for him to blaze on through; as he tends to solve most fairly quickly. However, if you where to hand him a length of knotted rope and tell him to untangle it, he would sit in a corner, face lit in childlike joy, while he worked. The moment he finished, he would spend an hour or more re-tangling the length to go again. Knot puzzles are his one true, pleasure.
History: Childhood/Pre-Academy
Hyakurai was lucky in a way; beyond small incidents, his childhood was uneventful. Coming from a ninja clan, the young Hyakurai was immersed in the world of shinobi at a fairly young age; at first with the basics. Exercise was a given, his parents used to play dancing games with him as a toddler to encourage his agility and coordination. These lead into sports, something Hyakurai showed little aptitude for and was quickly released from. The boy preferred games of mental skill and dexterity to mindless contact sports; so instead of playing solider with his cousins, he played general; sitting back to direct “his” soldiers. He was expected to join the fray properly at least half the time; his family didn't want him to be unprepared. By the time he was old enough for daycare, he was showing the makings of a fine tactician, and he likely would have stayed purely on that path, if not for his uncle giving him a wooden practice sword one morning.
Now, within Hyakurai's clan, few chose the path of the sword; while the sealing skills that made the clan noteworthy did lend themselves well to the discipline, the clan itself normally encouraged something with more potential for evolution. Instead of locking into such a strict doctrine, they would take a general specialty such as ninjutsu for their secondary skill sets. However, Hyakurai found this to be just another giant puzzle, one he could devote a significant amount of time to; which in turn made him a very, very happy child. By this point he had been taught the basics of the clan's Fuuinjutsu style, and he set about teaching himself ways to merge the two areas into something usable. At first, his family was hesitant; but when they saw how much he threw himself into the family history and techniques, they began to relax and allow him freedom to work and evolve. By the time his 6th birthday approached, he'd finally gained the skill needed to transfer the crude seals he was starting to create on his own through the sword. It was still a very rough, unrefined ability, but it was something all his own. The others like him, they used the sword as their main offensive weapon; using seals for nothing but trap or barrier. Hyakurai was working on combining both, young mind working out grand and different jutsu he hoped to create once his skill had progressed far enough.
Academy
His academy years where nothing special. Little happened to him as he worked his way up; the occasional playground fights, teasing for his oddly colored hair, etc. His teachers for the most part allowed his odd behavioral ticks; his awkwardness in social situations was easy to recognize by then. Given he wasn't shy, it was this awkwardness that got him in trouble most often. He wasn't above smacking some self-important school yard bully with his sword. Only once did he ever use Fuuinjutsu outside the classroom while in the academy; a student in his final year was harassing a small group of kids a year below Hyakurai. Well, the young Tsukino didn't like it, and after the older student blocked his sword; he slapped a paralysis seal upon him before proceeding to give the elder a rather nasty beat down. If not for the teacher that saw the majority of the incident, he might have been expelled right then and there; they found out a few hours post fight that the bully had a concussion from the one time Hyakurai smacked him in the head; but given the lack of lasting injuries, and the cries of the children he protected; he was allowed to finish with nothing more then a three-day suspension and detention until the summer break started at the end of the school year. After that, no one really bothered him anymore.
Genin
Genin life was boring; full of the usual easy jobs that were passed off as missions. Lots of cat hunting, plant harvesting, box moving. Not much on the way of action at all. His was placed on a team that favored taijutsu and weaponry, although the lone female Fai did have some skill with Genjutsu. The other young man, Haniki, was your run of the mill taijutsu/ninjutsu type; nothing very special about either. Hyakurai was... fond of them, in a way; they worked well together for the most part. Under the tutelage of a scarred old Jounin called simply Aoba, they worked their way up. Dozens of E ranked missions where taken and completed before they ever took on a D-rank, and even that was simple. Mostly caravan escorts and the like, the occasional bandit removal mission. Never anything overly difficult. He was lucky enough to be chosen to go on a C-rank mission once before he was allowed into a promotion exam. His cousins had been assigned to hunt down a rouge chuunin, and had decided to take him along as their fourth man. He was perfectly safe, for the most part; 3 chuunin an himself against a group of highway bandits with piss poor weaponry and a single rouge ninja. All he had to do was stay back from the worst of the fight and maintain the barriers, while tossing a few... special seals, every so often. Paralysis, movement restrictions, chakra seals... he had them all, and even if they weren’t strong enough to outright stop the enemy, they did the job of slowing them down perfectly well. It was the success of the mission that allowed him to move on to the promotion exams that year; as his sensei had planned to hold them back a bit longer to work on more D and introduce them to easier C-rank missions before sending them in.
Chuunin
His exams went smoothly, as was expected; Hyakurai one of the 5 ninja from various village promoted. Now a Chuunin, he returned to his old team, as he felt no real need to try and find another group he could possibly fit into; and he wasn't so egotistical to think that he was no longer in need of a proper sensei. However, given Hyakurai's primary specialties where something no one else in his team even touched, he found himself in need of a second sensei. Someone he could work purely on his Kenjutsu. Fuuinjutsu was easy enough; his entire clan was made up of them, and one of his elder uncles offered to take him as a proper student. Through this training, he was able to acquire a far better understanding of the complexities of the sealing arts then he was able to on his own. The experience of a master was what he needed, not some dry tome about the technicalities and such. Who cared what the ratio of the second line to the third point was? He needed someone who could improvise and see the beauty of the seal itself; and that could work on an individual basis, without making everything about mass produced “perfection”, as most scrolls and books on the subject tried to.
His father was able to refer him to one of the many Kenjutsu schools in the village, even pulling a few strings so that he could meet with the master of the school before ever joining. The master was... skeptical, to say the least, that Hyakurai would be able to fit in anywhere. At the time, he was a bit of a hot head still, and impatient. Hyakurai wanted it right then and there; and was unfamiliar with the concepts of strenuous work. Mental exercises, planning, even the complex world of seals... that was easy for Hyakurai. Physical labors, honing the body to sync with the mind? Not so much. This proved to be the first real challenge the teen had in years. It was just what he'd needed as well; Hyakurai came to realize over the next few weeks and months just how bored with his life he really was. A fire was reigniting in him, that thirst for real knowledge returning after years of easy victories and near mental atrophy. Oh rather, his ability to learn new concepts had atrophied; so the dual assault by his new teachers, combined with the increase in mission difficultly was doing him a world of good. However, this was also the time when he started to retreat from the world at large; really. Teenage years where never easy, unless you where extremely lucky; Hyakurai's quirks and social problems made sure he wasn't one of them.
For the most part he began to retreat into his own world; only coming out when on missions with his sensei and team, or around his closer cousins. Rai's parents noticed this, but didn't do anything about it at first. He'd always been somewhat shy, or so it seemed, so they figured he just needed time to find himself and blossom on his own. However, Hyakurai continued to do nothing more then pull away and focus ever harder on his training; to the point that he began to alienate people around him. His lack of focus outward was taken as a cold demeanor, or outright disinterest; to which the world at large decided to return the favor and ignore him as well. This kept on until he was 16; at which point his Kenjutsu master decided that what Hyakurai needed was a vacation. Of sorts. He took Hyakurai along on his yearly visit to a sister school in Hinowa; and this turned out to be a rather important event in Hyakurai's life. The male had never really left his home country before; the Chuunin exams the year he competed was in Ama; and his sensei preferred to stay within the country. His only real experience outside was a quick run over the border into Hana to help capture a Jounin-level missing nin that was terrorizing the area. Given the area he had been to was no different from the Ama side; there was nothing special about it. This trip to Hinowa however; it ignited a wanderlust in the teen that has only grown over the years. The trip wasn't much to talk about; a quick visit, sample the local markets, gawk at the giant trees in full foliage mode, go home and write a report about it.
Special Jounin
Hyakurai was 18 when he was offered the chance to become a Tokubetsu Jounin. Hyakurai was unimpressed, to say the least. He knew he wasn't full Jounin material; that wasn't the issue. However, he knew that Tokuju in general stayed in or near the village; rarely being sent anywhere else. True, it would give him all the time in the world to work on his specialties; from the trip to Hinowa until that point he had taken every mission he possibly could that was outside his home country; but he wasn't sure that was a good enough reason. He was even offered his own team to sweeten the deal; at which point he just laughed hysterically and told the Jounin that was offering the promotion that he was a moron, and that he (Hyakurai) had no time or patience for a Genin team. After he basically laughed the offer into the dirt; his parents and assorted family members went behind his back and talked to the promotion committee, explaining Rai's wanderlust issues, as well as his other quirks; at which point an agreement was reached. If Hyakurai took the position, he would be allowed to take missions and travel at will to other villages and countries, so long as he maintained a clean record and didn't cause problems in other nations. When offered this deal; Hyakurai was still a tad slow to accept; as he was wary of the validity of the offer. It wasn't until his uncles kicked him in the ass (literally) that he took the offer and was promoted to Tokubetsu Jounin.
His years as a Tokujo where mostly uneventful; he did the missions and ran a small squad of his own for a while. There really wasn't anything eventful to speak of; a few hurricanes, a couple of pirate raids, all in all a pretty easy time..
Jounin (A-rank)
He was 20 when he was promoted to full Jounin status; and to say there was a celebration was an understatement. It had been a long time since any new Jounin had been promoted, so there was a good reason for the people to celebrate. A sort of impromptu festival sprung up around the announcement, and to say that Hyakurai spent most of it hammered was... obvious. He spent most of it in close proximity to an old friend and classmate of his, Ai. They'd worked together for years, hung out and had fun and done those things normal friends did. Oh, he knew she had a thing for him; but he'd never bothered acting on it; sober Rai was a bit... asexual; he wasn't really into the idea of having those kind of relationships. Not to say he was a virgin or anything; he was plenty flirtatious and had his fair share of one night stands when drunk, and he wasn't above using his body to get information when needed.
Boy, was he EVER hungover when he woke up in Ai's bed.
Boy, did he just not give a fuck by that point.
Needless to say, some serious money changed hands that morning.
Needless to say, you don't find Hyakurai without AI anymore.
Good times.
RP Sample: It wasn't often he was out on his own anymore; most of his spar time was spent with Ai or training maybe working on a new seal or something in the comfort of his own home. People in his shoes had little free time; a night out drinking sounded good.
That wasn't what he had (outright) planned for tonight, though. He just wanted to go get hammered and relax; there was a new bar that had just opened that looked promising. He knew the owner; he was a refugee from an island that was wiped out by a hurricane years before and they'd gotten to know each other over the years.
Up at the bar he sat; a bottle of top shelf sake and a constantly refilled cup his only companion currently; he was only on his first, so very sober at the moment. Not that it mattered; he could get himself nicely drunk plenty fast; buy a couple more bottles and just mainline them until they hit his brain and have a longer party; but he didn't really feel like that yet. Nah, it was early enough; the sun had only been down half an hour or so; and the bar was just starting to get energized. "Oi. Rice Balls. Grilled. Red Bean Paste. Yeah?"
The bartender, a woman not much older than him but sporting the scars from a life as a ninja, tossed him a nod; they had a bit of an understanding; he'd give nice, blunt orders, and she wouldn't throw him out if he got rowdy. Lord knows he could afford to fix anything he broke; he'd dropped 20k when he walked in to cover anything that was; and told them to keep it either way. Basically paid them a week's profit before they'd even had a chance to drop the first bottle, and he was still paying for everything he ordered on top of it. Glorious arrangements are glorious.
Bottle tip. Cup Fill. Down the hatch the sake goes. Weeeeee.~~~
